You might have heard about PlayPumps ... http://tinyurl.com/2vc4vh ... the organization that makes children's merry-go-rounds that act as pumps for wells to pump clean, safe water.

Ann Fontaine shares this YouTube video

from St. John's Episcopal Church in Powell, WY, which is raising funds for a PlayPump.

I share this not just because it's a good organization ... but as a reminder that even a simple slideshow on YouTube is a great publicity/fundraiser for your MDG project!

MDG-related DVDs

The Girl in the Cafe - 95 min. From HBO films. Great romantic comedy/drama set at a G8 summit with the MDGs as the subtext. Bill Nighy. Kelly McDonald.

The Millennium Goals: Dream or Reality -- 27 min. From Bullfrog Films. Explores the ambition and scope of the UN's Millennium Development Goals, and the obstacles to their achievement.

A Closer Walk -  80 min. "The first film to depict humankind's confrontation with the global AIDS epidemic. The film's director and producer, Robert Bilheimer, is an Academy Award nominee for his film Cry of Reason, a profile of the South African anti-apartheid leader Beyers Naude. A Closer Walk was conceived with the late Jonathan Mann, architect of the World Health Organization's response to global AIDS." Narrated by Glenn Close and Will Smith.

Living With Slim - 28 min. "In many African countries, HIV/AIDS is called “Slim.” In this film, seven African children, ranging in age from 6 to 17 years old, talk about what it’s like to be HIV positive. Of the seven children, four are girls and three are boys. Three of the children have lost both parents and three have lost one parent to AIDS."

Through A Child's Eyes: Views of Global Poverty - "Most elementary-age children exude innocence and optimism. What about kids who face extreme poverty? This documentary focuses on the plight of underprivileged nine-year-olds across the world—revealing their hardships and challenges as well as the light-hearted spirit they often exhibit in spite of their surroundings. Traveling to Egypt, Rwanda, India, Cambodia, Romania, Brazil, and New York City, the film presents a case study of a child in each location through compelling interviews, tours of struggling schools, and visits to barely livable homes. In every segment, the most illuminating moment follows the question, “What would you do if you had a lot of money?” (55 minutes)"

The Haiti Partnership - 25 min. Recommended by Evelyn Piety (W. Tennessee), who says "It is moving, inspiring, eye-opening, etc. Besides testimonials from members of the partnership who have been on mission trips to Haiti, as well as from Bishop Johnson, much of the video was filmed in Haiti and shows what it's like to live in what amounts to a landfill (without the bulldozers to come around and tidy it up) in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere where most people get to eat only one meal - every other day - and where life itself is a luxury. This video is professionally produced and is incredibly powerful. The DVD is available for a $25 donation, with the money going toward clean water projects. It can be ordered from: Grace-St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Attn: Rev. Joe Porter, 1720 Peabody Ave., Memphis, TN 38104

MDG-related Audio Programs

Africa: "Portraits of Poverty" series - The ELCA has put together a great site that includes links to these six excellent radio programs aired on National Public Radio (NPR) in 2006, and each show targets one aspect of poverty in Africa. Around each eight-to-ten-minute audio experience, they’ve wrapped some helps for hunger leaders: study, discussion, sharing and action suggestions, relevant links, and additional encouragement for your work in combating hunger.
